For first-time visitors
What actually happens on Sunday morning?
If you have never been to a Quaker meeting before, here is exactly what to expect. Goshen Friends is one of the oldest silent worship communities in Chester County. There is no order of service, no sermon, and no one leading from the front. We simply sit together and wait in silence.
-
Arrive and settle in The room is quiet when you enter. Sit wherever feels comfortable. Meeting begins as soon as the first person sits down.
-
We sit together in silence For about 50 minutes, we wait in stillness. There is no agenda, no music, no planned readings.
-
Anyone may speak If someone feels moved to share a reflection, they stand and speak briefly. There is no obligation to respond or react.
-
Children rejoin us At around 10:50, children come back from their program. A volunteer then welcomes everyone, invites announcements, and closes worship at 11:00 AM.
-
Stay for fellowship Everyone is welcome in the West Room after meeting for coffee, conversation, and a chance to get to know us.
Common questions
Do I need to believe anything to attend?
No. Goshen Friends welcomes people of all backgrounds, beliefs, and spiritual starting points. Many people come simply because they value silence and community.
Will I be asked to speak or participate?
Not at all. You are welcome to simply sit and observe. There is no moment where newcomers are singled out or expected to introduce themselves during worship.
What should I wear?
Whatever you are comfortable in. There is no dress code. People tend to come in everything from casual to business casual.
Do I need to tell anyone I am coming?
No need to sign up or RSVP. Just come. The door is open at 10:00 AM every Sunday of the year.
Can I join on Zoom instead?
Yes. We offer a hybrid option every week. Email clerk@goshenquakers.org and the clerk will send you the link.

Our roots
Over 300 years of Quaker life in Chester County
The earliest recorded gathering of Friends in Goshenville took place in 1702 at the home of Robert Williams. Goshen Preparative Meeting was established the following year, and a log meetinghouse was built in 1709 near the burial grounds at what is now the corner of Paoli Pike and Route 352. The community has gathered here, in one form or another, ever since.
